Dc Marriage License..

I can officially say I am getting married this month :) That is so exciting / crazy! The exciting part is I get to marry the love of my life in 18 days and I couldn't be happier--the crazy part is there is so much to do , and my "we'll get to it" doesn't really seem to work--the times of procrastination have officially ended. One of the "checks" on our check list--actually the highest priority is our Marriage License, since well without it we aren't officially married--kinda a big deal :) Since we are getting married in D.C we knew it was required to get blood work done to prove that neither FI or I have syphilis (VDRL), we also knew we had to wait till at least 30 days before the wedding, for the results to be valid. However you have to go for the license at least three days before you need it. We are at the 18 day mark and FI and I have been trying to figure out this blood work situation for the past 10 days I swear!

We have called multiple places ( including both our doctors, who happen to be based in VA) and they have never heard of the form that we need--we have called doctors in D.C who have no idea what we are talking about--my Fiance has called District of Columbia Health Department who told him that we needed the DHS 366 form, but they weren't very helpful in telling us where to locate it.

Finally FI got in touch with somebody who told us we could go to the GW medical associates, it is located in foggy bottom ( right near where FI works)--it costs us $79 each, but they have the form and the results are available in 24 hours. I feel it is ridiculous that we have to spend $158 together on top of the marriage license fee--but I don't see any other way around it. They have told us that insurance doesn't cover it.

Is this the only option, or have any brides out there gotten married in D.C and found an easier way to get the blood work/syphilis test? As of now we are planning to go on Friday, so I will let you know how it goes!

You can get the test results from any lab and take them to the DHS office (next to the courthouse) and get the results certified for $10. We got our tests through our family doctors as a part of other tests we needed and only paid our co-pay. My other friends who married in DC did the dame. You can get free testing through the health department STD unit in SE.

We just did the same thing. Go to B&W Stat Lab on Georgia Ave, near Howard Univ. It takes 20 min for results and is $20 per person.

I never knew DC made its residents jump through hoops. Virgina was show up at the courthouse, swear an oath, take the paper back to the officiant who had 5 days to return it after the ceremony.

Wow....good to know though

Yes, the lab on Georgia Avenue is even open on Saturdays. We were in and out in less than an hour. Not an issue for you, but for your faithful readers, don't mess around with getting that license. Especially if your big day is close to a National holiday. They don't include those as business days (i.e. Christmas EVE, and probably the day after Thanksgiving). Get'er done!

Also, you don't have to wait 30 days before your wedding to get the license. The blood results are only valid for 30 days but you can go for up to a year before your wedding. We were married in July in d.c. and went and got our blood tests and license back in May.
