assigned seats: like 'em or leave 'em?

Obviously you have to do seating charts if you're doing a plated meal. We are doing a buffet so I've been thinking this whole time that we don't have to worry about assigning seats. But do you think it's necessary anyway? When I think back on it, the plated meal weddings had assigned seating, and the buffet meal weddings did not. But my caterer suggested we assign seats anyway just because.

From one angle it seems like it would be nice to just let people sit with whomever they want. But then I do remember the weddings I've been to where I have my very own place card and I get to meet some of the guests I might not have otherwise had a chance to talk to.. And there's so much inspiration on the blogs for creative ways to do place cards and seating charts and all that.

I know I could get away with not seating people. But what do you think? Are you doing buffet or plated meal (or dessert buffet or anything else)? For those of you doing buffet, are you assigning seats? It just seems like one more thing I'm not sure I want to worry about..

I'm doing buffet, with assigned tables, not seats.

The problem with non-assigned seats is that grandma could end up either next to the speakers or in the back of the room - neither of which would be good. This way you have control over who sits at which table (since there will be some VIP peeps), but people still get to choose who to sit by.

We are doing buffet wtih assigned tables. I was never big fan of the idea of just letting people sit wherever and knowing my FI's shy family...I literally wouldn't put it past them to clump together and even pull up an extra chair to a table of 8. In five years only our immediate family members have met. Even still my brother hasn't met my FI's parents or brothers. So we will be intermingling the families amongst the tables through assigned tables.

We're doing grilling stations & buffet combo and will be assigning tables, but not seats. I have been to several events without assigned tables and someone always ends up stuck taking the last remaining seat at a table where they know no one. We want our guests to have the best possible time at our wedding, so they'll be seated at tables with friends they know and like.
